When it comes to social media marketing, you know that your followers are everything. Your followers are the ones who are reading your social media content, creating conversation on your profile and sharing your content with the world.
Therefore, if you find that you are losing followers, you could be afraid that your social media marketing campaign is going to go downhill.
It is true that you should try to salvage your social media followers if you can. Before you can do so, however, you have to figure out why you are being unfollowed. Then, you can make changes that will help you keep your existing followers and even develop more followers.
1. You’re Posting Too Often
For the most part, people are on social media because they want to connect with their friends and family. Although people obviously follow their favorite brands because they want to see the things that they post, they don’t want their newsfeeds to be flooded with posts from companies.
This means that if you are posting so much that you are flooding the feeds of your followers, they just might unfollow you. Even if they don’t, they might adjust their settings so that they don’t see your posts in their newsfeeds.
You probably know that you should be posting on social media regularly if you want to engage properly with your followers without getting lost in the shuffle, but there is a such thing as posting too much. This can vary based on the platform that you’re using, and it can obviously change due to circumstance. On average, however, you should keep it under control. For example, try dropping down to two Facebook posts per day and three “Tweets” on Twitter per day. This will provide enough interaction that your followers will see you in their feed, but you won’t have to worry about being unfollowed because you’re posting too much, either.
2. Your Posts are Boring
People get on social media to see content that is interesting to them. If your posts are boring, they just might unfollow you so that there is more room in their newsfeeds for things that they find more interesting.
Don’t just post on the social media for the sake of posting. Take the time to come up with content that is unique, interesting and engaging. There are a few different types of posts that followers might be interested in, and it’s a good idea to switch things up between these different types of posts so that you can appeal to your entire audience.
- Educational – You’re an expert in your industry, and you have knowledge that all of your followers don’t have. Some of your posts should be educational and should focus on teaching your followers something that they don’t know. Posts shouldn’t be too heavy, though; they should be light and should feature facts and information that are easy to read. However, your followers should walk away feeling as if they have learned something new from reading your educational posts.
- Conversational – Do you know what people love to do on social media? Communicate! Some posts should be conversational and should encourage a conversation between your brand and your followers. Asking questions or talking about current events can be a good way to get a conversation started, but be careful about the topics that you choose — you don’t want to talk about something that people could find potentially offensive.
- Funny – Who doesn’t like to have a good laugh when scrolling through their social media feeds? Jokes, memes and videos that will get people laughing can be a great addition to the day when you’re posting on social media. If possible, look for funny posts that are somehow related to your industry.
These are some of the main types of posts that you can strive for on social media. Consider putting together a content calendar, or at least jotting down ideas as you come up with them, to ensure that you’re always adding something interesting to your social media profiles.
3. You’re Too Salesy
Obviously, the point of your social media marketing campaign is so that you can market your business and the products and services that you have to offer. However, this shouldn’t be too obvious. If your profiles are too salesy, people will feel as if they are being pitched every time that they read your posts. Since people encounter advertising all day, every day, this isn’t necessarily something that they want to deal with when they’re relaxing and using social media.
Therefore, you should ensure that your posts are not too salesy. There is nothing wrong with posting to share your new products or the services that you have to offer, but every post shouldn’t be promotional. Also, be careful about how “pushy” you are with your posts. Share what you have to offer, but don’t write up a huge, pushy post to go along with it. Once your followers know about your products and services, they can check them out on their own. You might just push them away if you are too pushy about it.
If you have been losing social media followers — or if you want to be proactive and prevent this from happening in the first place — you should consider these three common issues.
