If you’re a regular reader of Stream Companies’ blog, I’m sure by now you’re highly aware of what Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is. However if you’re new here, SEO is the process of getting your site to appear at the top of a search engine via organic search.
What’s organic search? Well, let’s pretend you own a cupcake shop in Philadelphia. An organic search is when a potential customer would do a google search using the term “Philadelphia Cupcakes.” Hopefully, if you have a successful SEO strategy, your business would then appear organically.
If you find your website does not appear via organic search it might be a good idea to continue reading for the 5 steps on how to improve your website’s SEO.
Step One: Choose a Unique Name
During a search, you want your business to appear with ease. If your name is something common, it will most likely be more difficult to find. The more common the name, the broader the search results will be. The more unique your company name will be, the more likely it will appear via organic search.
Step Two: Create a SEO Friendly Website
Making sure you have optimized your website is crucial for a successful SEO strategy.
- Use popular and frequent search terms throughout the content and pages of your site
- Incorporate proper meta data on your site. This should include relevant page titles and description. Remember that the meta data should not exceed a certain amount of characters. (Check out this blog post I wrote on meta descriptions for more info).
Step Three: Incorporate Fresh Content On a Regular Basis
Think about it, the more content you have on your site, the more likely someone will the land on your site via organic search. One easy way to incorporate content is through a blog. Adding a blog to your site can acts as home for content. Posting once a week on relevant content with highly searchable words can drive organic visits to your site.
Step Four: Link Building
Links are crucial in the world of SEO. Link building is the process of getting external websites to link back to a page on your website. This is important because Google can actually see that other sites are linking back to yours, will therefore trust your site more, and in turn increase its search ranking results.
Step Five: Citations
It’s important to monitoring the business information (address, phone number, how the name of your business appears) on your citations. When I say “citations” I am referring to listings such as your business Google+ page, Yelp page, Bing page, ect. Google monitors these sites and likes to see that all of the information mirrors each other perfectly. The more accurate the information is, the more google with trust your business and therefore increase your search results.
