8 Tips to Build Your List

I promised myself I wasn’t going to say, “The list is king.” We really need a new moniker for this tried and true revenue building tool. After all, kings are overrated because we all know who really runs the show. So replace king with whoever you think is the top dog and you get the idea. Suffice it to say a businesses list is paramount to the success of their revenue producing activities.

If you have an opt-in list then you are sitting on piles of cash. When you properly use your list, your earning potential is very high.

One of the first things many of the new entrepreneurs I work with ask me is, “How do I build a list?” The following points describe some of the best ways for building your email list.

1) Publish a Newsletter

If you’re like most people today, hen you need information on virtually anything you turn to the internet. When you publish a newsletter, you will be the first source they turn to because you are lurking right in their inbox! Be sure you are providing them the information they want – when they want it – and you will be the person they choose to give their coveted contacted contact information to.

We are in the Information Age and so people are desperate for information. Everyone is so busy with their lives they don’t have time to find the information for themselves. Publish a newsletter in your niche that is full of valuable content and you will get people flocking to you to sign up.

2) E-Courses

Once you’ve got their attention with your newsletter, keep them coming back for more with a free e-course. Create at least a seven part course that is delivered every few days into their inbox. Of course, the e-course also subtly sells your product!

3) Write regular blog posts

Create a blog and consistently publish high quality posts. Include your newsletter sign up at the end of each post. Promote your blog posts on social media, content curation sites and bookmarking sites. Learn more about blog promotion here.

4) Free Books

A free e-book is an excellent way to build your list. It doesn’t have to be an epic tome, just valuable information that people will exchange their email address for. You can write one yourself or have one ghostwritten for you. Make sure though that it is information that your visitors will want to have, and make sure you have included links to your products and sites in the book. You can also include affiliate links to further maximise your earnings.

5) Free Membership Site

Creating a free membership site is an excellent way to get people’s email addresses. Offer valuable content for free but only to members who opt in. You can then upsell them other products or other levels of membership with more products and more resources available to them.

6) Squeeze Page

A squeeze page is a pre-sales letter page where you capture a person’s email address before they move on to view your sales letter. This is very effective and you can also personalise the sales letter with their name or other details from the squeeze page.

7) Pop Up

Ugh… I hate pop ups. Yeah, me too. BUT the reason so many people use them is that they work. Just google “do popups work” and you will get pages of successful studies. Marketing guru, Neil Patel, explains it in this video. (If you’re not a fan of his novel-length blog posts, the good news is this video is only a little over 2 minutes.) The important thing is to do popups the right way.

8) Sign up bonuses

Offer your visitors a bonus if they sign up for your newsletter, e.g. “20% off XYZ for readers” or a number of e-books or reports that will be of interest to them.
