Nearly a quarter of a billion people have downloaded AI girlfriend and boyfriend apps on Android phones alone.
A recent survey finding about AI use reminded me of a joke by the brilliant satirist Tom Lehrer:
“I know some people feel that marriage as an institution is dying out, but I disagree and the point was driven home to me rather forcefully not long ago by a letter I received which said: ‘Darling, I love you and I cannot live without you. Marry me, or I will kill myself.’ Well, I was a little disturbed at that until I took another look at the envelope and saw that it was addressed to Occupant.”
The finding: Nearly a quarter of a billion people are using AI girlfriend and boyfriend apps on Android phones alone. The study of “the virtual companionship and dating sector” by SplitMetrics also revealed that AI girlfriends are seven times more likely to be downloaded than boyfriends.
I have no idea what the implications of this are, so I hope some enterprising anthropologists get on it fast.
