Audio: 4 Tips To Make Your Youtube Videos Professional

July 24, 2015

You want to stand out on Youtube. You want to make your channel professional and original. One of the first steps is making sure you have a great content and professional audio. Imagine watching a television show or a movie and hearing background noise of the crew laughing and eating. It would seem pretty unprofessional, not to mention annoying. Let’s look at some easy things we can do to make our videos the highest quality.

Audio Tip #1

One of the things you can control easily is the tone that you are talking. You are in front of an audience the same way an actor is in front of an audience on stage. Do not talk in a low voice, certainly not a whisper. For obvious reason, no one will be able to hear what you are saying. Your viewer will have turned their volume all the way up to try and understand what you are saying and then when they watch their next video it will be crazy loud. They will get mad and you risk loosing a subscriber. Now that may be an exaggerated example, but it is something you want to keep in mind.

The same goes for talking too loud. You want to be heard, but you don’t want to be screaming. It’s annoying and it kind of looks funny. Instead, you want to be confident and clear with your words. Speak clearly so your audience can easily understand you. Enunciate your words too ensure your viewer is having an enjoyable time watching your video. The last thing you want is for your watch time to decrease because people can not understand what you are saying.

Audio Tip #2

If you have a good talking volume but you always jumble your words and get tongue tied think about using cue cards. Cue cards are great for many different purposes. If you are someone who wants everything planned out in advance you can write a script that you can just read once you get in front of the camera. I do not recommend doing this. The best part about Youtube is how organic it is. Your viewers might noticed that you are not natural with your language and take it as unauthentic. Instead, consider righting down some talking points that you want to hit during your video. Let the rest just flow!

Audio Tip #3

Ensure that you can film in a quiet space. Think about your surroundings. Is there a fan on in your room? Is the air conditioning cranking? Is there construction going on outside your window? Is your phone on silent? These are all things you need to consider when choosing a filming location so your audience be have 100% of their focus on you and your content, not the fan in the background.

Audio Tip #4

When we talk about audio we need to consider microphones. There are many different types of microphones available to you, depending on how much money you want to spend. I do recommend that you splurge a little bit and get a nice microphone. As Channel Empire says in the video below, “If Youtube videos were human, the audio would be like the legs.” If you are serious about creating Youtube videos it will be worth the investment.

Audio is important, make sure you plan ahead. The last thing you want to do is film an entire video and when you go to edit you find that your neighbors dog was barking through the entire thing. Professional videos are the first step toward growing your audience.
