ChatGPT Forecasts Use To Grow Nearly 900% In 2023

The use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and ChatGPT in particular will see massive growth this year.

Insider Intelligence forecasts that use will skyrocket 882% this year to 61.5 million — up from 6.3 million in 2022. While growth will slow to double digits in 2024, the use of GAI is expected to surpass several milestones.

One milestone points to an increase of more than 20% of internet users on the platform, up to 25% in 2024. About 25.5% of the U.S. population will use ChatGPT by 2025.

Peter Newman, forecasting analyst at Insider Intelligence, believes GAI will “radically” change search, the way consumers get information, and how they make purchase decisions.

“It will require new formats and relationships to place ads, kicking off a race to get into generated responses that will forever change SEO,” he says.

In 2023, 79% of GAI users will use ChatGPT, but Insider Intelligence estimates the platform is slowly losing share as competitors enter the market. By 2025, its share of users will drop to 75.2%.

ChatGPT is the main growth driver of generative AI use in the U.S. The category as a whole will grow 894.4% this year to 77.8 million users. Growth will slow to double digits next year, when it will surpass 100 million users.

This year, more than 20% of the U.S. population will use a GAI platform at least once a month. That share will surpass one-third of the population by 2025 — a result of the integration of GAI into work applications. Less experienced workers tasked with overseeing large amounts of semi-automated processes will use GAI the most.

Many cloud platforms have partnered with AI companies to help businesses customize generative models.

U.S. residents between the ages of 25 and 34 are the heaviest users, closely followed by 35- to-44-year olds. Those between the ages of 18 and 24 are the third-biggest user group, followed by 45- to 54-year-olds.

Insider Intelligence forecasting analyst Peter Newman believes GAI will “radically” change search, the way consumers get information, and how they make purchase decisions. “It will require new formats and relationships to place ads, kicking off a race to get into generated responses that will forever change SEO,” he said.
