eBay has always made it a priority to support their sellers. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic created massive challenges that continue to reverberate across American society and the world. In a new report released by eBay, women were able to support themselves through the pandemic by selling online, be it as part of a small business or as an individual seeking extra income. Women were able to work flexibly and safely from home at a time when many were burdened by increased household responsibilities.

Women were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. This was due to the fact that sectors of the economy hit hardest (think hospitality, restaurants, in-store retail, arts, recreation and non-emergency health care services) employ more women than men. Women also took on more of the drastically increased household burdens that came with remote-school for kids, remote-work, childcare disruptions and other hardships.

When the going got tough, eBay was there to help. 69% of women surveyed for the report said the ability to sell on eBay was a benefit during the pandemic. For women who reported they were new to selling on eBay or had increased their selling during the pandemic, 82% said they did so because of job loss, reduction in income, or other hardship. eBay’s report also reveals that women value the flexibility afforded by selling on the eBay marketplace. When women are expected to provide an extensive range of duties at home, their ability to earn a living is constrained by regimented working environments. Being able to carve out a selling schedule around household demands is a necessary condition for these women.

“eBay makes everything so easy; I didn’t miss a step in keeping my business afloat while being able to provide and care for my family,” says Jessica Pate, owner of MyKiddosCollegeFund clothing business.
