What is E. Coli and what symptoms does it cause?
E. Coli is a bacteria that is harmful to humans when ingested. The FSIS says the bacteria usually makes people sick between two and eight days after consumption. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and dehydration.
The good news is that most people recover in about a week. However, an E. Coli infection can also cause serious complications, including a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can occur in anyone but is common in older adults and children under the age of five.
“It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output,” the FSIS warns. “Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.”
What should I do if I have the recalled ground beef?
The FSIS says consumers who have purchased these items should not eat them. Instead, they should throw them away or take them back to their place of purchase for a refund.
