Have you ever found yourself in a situation where some really positive things were happening, either in your life or in your career, and someone said to you: Don’t mess this up?
That’s what we’re going to talk about today: How you can make sure that you don’t mess up the opportunities that come your way—that in fact, you take full advantage of them.
Controlling Your Thoughts
The most important advice I can give you is to exert some control over your thought life.
Here’s what I mean: In the scenario I laid out above, you probably think to yourself: Oh my gosh… I really could mess this up!
But what if, instead, you replaced that negativity with something positive. What if you thought: Okay, something good is happening—now how do I take advantage of this?
See, we often let our thoughts run away from us, and they can lead us down some negative roads. By focusing on the things we don’t want to happen, we actually attract those things into our lives!
You need to change the words in your head, and one way to do that is to change the words that come out of your mouth. Maybe you actually say this to your well-meaning friend: Why would you want me to focus on not messing up? Why would you want me to focus on the negative, instead of cultivating something more positive?
Whether you say it out loud or not, I do want you to be ready for the next time someone tells you not to mess up. I want you to block that thought completely. I want you to say: No, I’m not going to mess this up. Instead, I’m going to take full advantage of this opportunity.
It may sound like a small thing, but actually, I think you’ll find that redirecting your thoughts and your energy in a more positive direction is exactly what you need to succeed, and to leverage each opportunity that comes your way.
