Resign with Professionalism: Letter of Resignation Template

— October 4, 2017

At some point in our careers, we will resign from one position to start something new. This post will give you a template to craft your resignation letter, together with a few tips to resign with professionalism, protecting your reputation and personal brand. A resignation letter or email also makes it clear you are leaving the company and honors your contractual responsibilities.

Depending on how your organization works they will require either a printed letter or an email stating that you are resigning from the company.

In essence, your letter simply has to say:

  • You are resigning
  • The date of your last day

Printed Letter of Resignation

Most companies state that your resignation letter should be addressed to your line manager. Before writing your letter check exactly what the policy is and follow instructions. Our sample letter is addressed to your line manager.

Unless you work remotely resigning by email is not the best option. Even then it is best to inform your line manager that you are resigning over the phone before sending the email. Again, check your company policies and follow them. It is good practice to include Human Resources in your resignation email. Here is a template you can adapt.

Always ensure you resign professionally and do not start attacking the company or people within no matter how you may feel towards them. This could impede references, and you may need to return to the company in the future.
