+swappow banks on swap, sell, lend business with sporting gear
Skate boarders, snowboarders, bicyclists and surfers in search of equipment and accessories can rent, borrow, donate or buy goods in a new online marketplace.
Phoenix-based creators Joe Dunnigan and Esteban Morales launched +swappow, a local company that offers a social commerce platform dedicated to the action sports industry.
Dunnigan, who has lauched other startups in Phoenix, is cashing in on the growing business of sharing that is proving successful with businesses like Uber, Lyft or Bag, Borrow or Steal, a luxury purse online marketplace.
“It’s designed to bring people together with common interests and idle assets, and makeing them available to other people,” he said.
+swappow, which is also available on the iTunes app store, enables shoppers and sellers to share, purchase, sell or donate equipment, apparel, footwear and accessories in exchange for cash or credit. So far +swappow has attracted 3000 visitors from 53 countries and has done $100 in sales during the 8 weeks of its public beta testing, he said.
Dunnigan said the mission of his business is to help children stay active through sports, and make it affordable by connecting them to people who want to share or sell a gently used item they do not use anymore. +swappow’s goal is to encourage and enable an 10 million kids to participate in action sports by 2018.
In addition, +swappow donates a percentage of profits to charities and sponsors action sports programs. The Phoenix business has partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale and the Skate After School program.
“Action sports are great for kids for so many reasons – but they also are expensive,” Dunnigan said. “At the same time, existing participants frequently outgrow, lose interest or want to upgrade their gear, but they either feel guilty or can’t afford to just throw away their old stuff and it just collects dust.”
