Remember back in the day when we were young, unafraid and full of hope?
When we allowed ourselves the freedom to dream uninhibitedly and without scrutiny or fear of what others think.
Simply put, as children the world was our oyster.
But something happens as we get older. That sense of wonder slowly disappears, our big ideas and dreams take a back seat to worrying about everyday crises (like what to make for dinner, or which celebrity couple is breaking up).
We forget how to dream.
Last month I was asked to be part of a blog crawl organized by Debrina Wright-Williams, someone who hasn’t forgotten how to dream. She is an amazing coach who is hosting the Dreamers 2 Doers Retreat in Mexico next spring and is about to launch a 10 Day Discovery Adventure.
She challenged a group of bloggers with a simple question: How do you DO your dreams?
When I think about dreams, goals, and aspirations I think about my children. I watch as they innocently and more importantly, confidently state what they plan to achieve… from reading their first chapter book to living on Mars someday. I want them to hold onto that curiosity and thirst for greatness, forever.
I myself have lost sight of my own dreams and just recently found my way back to chasing them down.
It. Feels. So. Good.
My return to the wonderful world of dreaming was inspired by a picture book I bought my sons a few months ago called What Do You Do With An Idea by Kobi Yamada.
The book chronicles a child’s journey from the inception of an idea to its full-blown realization. Along the way, he encounters self-doubt, judgement from others, and tries to keep the idea a secret.
Only this idea, this dream, was too special to stay hidden away so he finally unleashes it to the world.
“I don’t know how to describe it, but it went from being here to being everywhere. It wasn’t just a part of me anymore… it was now a part of everything.”
This book spoke to me. Straight to the heart, grab me by the collar-type stuff. Right then and there I knew what I needed to do… follow my own dreams. Who cares what others will think, this is for me, not them.
Here I am today writing on my blog, sharing my passion for writing and knowledge of marketing for small business owners. And it all started with a little idea about a six years ago that I hid away from the world. It may have taken half a decade to blossom but it’s here now and that’s all that matters.
Blogging a la Mode is a labor of love, a work in progress, but it’s all mine and I’m proud to share it.
“And then, I realized what you do with an idea…
You change the world.”
I implore you to take some time out occasionally and revert back to being a child. Embrace the joy you once felt at the thought of a new idea or dream.
Besides it’s the dreamers that make this world go round. I’m talking about legends like Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, and Amelia Earhart. #Dreamers2Doers
Now, it’s your turn. How do you DO your dreams? What truly stirs your soul that you’ve let lay dormant for far too long?
And be sure to check out #Dreamers2Doers!
