Yelp Data Shows Success Comes More Easily When Brands Build Community
Yelp debuted its first Most Loved Brands list on Thursday based on the company’s data, highlighting the best-in-class restaurants and retailers.
The list of the 50 most-loved restaurants, food and retail brands, according to the Yelp community, reveals the qualities most desired by those using the platform, such as affordability, great customer service and consistent, high-quality products.
“Just as we see with local businesses, national restaurants and retailers have a significant impact on their local communities, and this list aims to honor those national brands that Yelpers love the most,” said Kadecia Ber, advertising trends expert and director of multilocation solutions at Yelp. “We hope brands will recognize and value the impact that they have on their local communities, as well as prioritize qualities consumers value like affordability, great customer service and quality products that brands on the list share.”
Trader Joe’s, the grocery retailer known for its creative private-label food products, topped the list with its focus on community. Founded in 1967, Trader Joe’s has more than 500 stores across 42 states and Washington, D.C. The highest-rated Trader Joe’s store is in Orem, Utah. Consumers praised Trader Joe’s employees for their cheerful and quick service, indicating that they go out of their way to shop at that location.
Popular restaurants and bakery brands that made the list include specialty shop Nothing Bundt Cakes; Queens, New York-based bubble tea spot Kung Fu Tea; and the Bradenton, Florida-based cafe First Watch.
Floor & Decor took the No. 5 spot, while Texas Roadhouse took No. 6 and The Cheesecake Factory came in at No. 7. Bonefish Grill, Costco Wholesale, and World Market round out the top 10.
When asked to cite the biggest surprises on the list, Ber said: “I love to see fast-growing challenger brands being recognized for their success, such as Jersey Mike’s, First Watch and Kung Fu Tea.
Ber is a “huge fan” of Potbelly Sandwich Works.
“The first location I ever visited was in Chicago over 20 years ago, and I thought I’d discovered the best-kept secret in the city,” she said. “It’s been amazing to see this brand grow and spread throughout the country over the years. And it’s surprising to see so many retail brands make the list. Brands like Floor & Decor, Costco and World Market demonstrate how much of an impact a good retail experience, great products and affordable prices can have on customers.”
Local communities offer value to consumers. Based on Yelp data, those using the platform tend to love challenger brands the most — fast-growing brands that offer great customer service and unique, high-quality products.
Trader Joe’s is a great example of a brand that puts service above all. Employees go out of their way to welcome customers with smiles and cheerful attitudes, and that is reflected in their reviews on Yelp, Ber said.
